Background & Analysis

According to the most recent IUCN Red List, there are over 16,000 species that are threatened today. Species that are threatened are generally classified as critically endangered, endangered, or vulnerable. Critically endangered species are extremely likely to go extinct. Species that are endangered have a high chance of becoming extinct. Vulnerable species may have a high chance of becoming extinct, but unlike those that are critically endangered or simply endangered, they don’t face extinction in the near future.

As the world of humans grows, the animal kingdom is forced to inhabit smaller and smaller habitats. Many species today occupy only a fraction of the land they used to. This habitat destruction and alteration decreases the chance of survival because the newer habitats might not meet their survival needs. In the cases of some animals, like the polar bear, global warming and climate change are the cause of habitat destruction.

Another large factor is human exploitation of animals for profit. Furs and horns are still much sought after items, be it for medicinal purposes or fashion or prestige, so people continue to slaughter animals. This type of hunting and hunting for pure sport still poses problems to animals who can’t withstand the amount of death that results.

Pollution is also a growing problem. Wastes and chemicals that are dumped into the surrounding environments are wreaking havoc on ecosystems. These pollutants taint water and food supplies, which is detrimental to animals and plants alike. Air pollutants and oil spills also disrupt and kill off various species.

As the years pass, more and more species become endangered or face extinction. Species that die out can never be brought back. By working to preserve these various plants, animals, and aquatic life, we help preserve our environment. In addition, we are also affected by changes in the environments we live in. We share and depend on nature, using it as a source of nourishment and needed resources. Plants from around the world are used in both modern medicines and old remedies for illnesses and ailments alike. Wildlife is important in so many ways, so it’s important that we make efforts to preserve it for years to come.
